Frequently Asked Questions

How many lessons will I need?

Government statistics show that "Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 47 hours of professional training combined with 20 hours of private practice." However I find that the number of lesson needed varies form person to person depending on many different factors. Using a progress record helps to keep your training very focused & therefore speeds things up.

Can my Dad/Mum/friend to take me out for practice?

Yes. Your accompanying driver must be over 21 & must have held (and still hold) a full licence in the relevant category of vehicle, for at least 3 years. The car must be properly insured for you as a learner. It must have L-plates front & back (not stuck in the windows).

What do I need before my first lesson?

You must have both parts of a valid provisional car license, (photo card & paper counterpart).  We will need to see this before you can be taken on the road. Your eyesight will also be checked to ensure it's at the minimum standard for driving.

Do I need to do my Theory/ hazard perception test before I start driving lessons?
No, but it’s a good idea to start studying for it while you are training; the theory you learn will help you with your driving, as will the hazard perception.  The theory test is valid for 2 years, so you will need to pass your driving test in this time, otherwise you will have to take the theory test again.

Which car will I take my test in?

Most people take their test in our cars, booking a 2 hour lesson. This allows you to have some practice before going to the test centre and taking the test, and then to get you home. Your instructor must agree that your driving is at the required standard for you to use a James Driver Training car on your driving test.

Family and friends have taught me to drive…can you tell me if I’m ready for my test?

We can conduct an assessment lesson to see if your driving is at the standard required for the DSA driving test & advise you when to book a test. Please note that trainees are only able to take the test in our cars if the instructor believes they are at the required standard.

How can I pass my test 1st time?

The secret to having a great chance of passing 1st time is to thoroughly prepare for the test. Towards the end of your driver training we guide you through "mock" tests to assess your driving when under pressure & mentally prepare you for the real test. During the mock any driving errors you make are recorded on a driving test marking sheet.  The results help us assess if your require any further training before booking a test.

Do you do intensive courses?
Yes, however I find learners get quite tired after driving for more than 2 hours at a time.  Please ring me on 07795 660 229 and we can discuss your options.
